Welcome to the Trib

Welcome to the July 2007 issue of our little newsletter, The Tranny Tribune and Happy Canada Day!

My apologies for the fact that this issue is a bit smaller than usual but I think I have a fairly good excuse for under-performing this month.

I am very slowly getting back into the swing following a heart attack earlier this month. I have always taken care over my diet, I don't smoke and I go to the gym three times a week. However, perhaps it was a wake up call telling me not to work seven days a week and often 14 hours a day.

The many messages I received from my TW sisters while I was in hospital really were a huge help to my recovery. They were very, very much appreciated. Thank you all.

Over the coming weeks I will be looking at ways that I can increasingly devolve power to our members. After all, Trannyweb is your community. I can't do everything and what if I suddenly wasn't around anymore? I think that now is the time for Trannyweb to stand on its own feet.

Although my heart attack prevented me from going to Sparkle in the UK, I was thrilled to hear that two of our girls received second and third places in the Miss Sparkle contest. Lucy Dawlish from the UK and Joelle from Canada. More on that below right.

I recently received an email from one of our members who said that she had been on the point of suicide when by chance, she stumbled across Trannyweb. The support and friendship she has received here since she became a member has turned her life around. Porscha Palomar interviews her this month.

The number of transgender people who do commit suicide every month is staggering though. I recently heard the statistics for the UK and they were shocking. The US and Australia also have big tranny suicide problems. The University of New Hampshire in the US says that, "Some studies indicate that the rate of attempted suicide for transgender youth is higher than 50%". That is staggering!.

We are now thinking about starting a huge TG suicide awareness campaign to help save more lives. Spearheaded by Miss Sparkle runner-up, Lucy Dawlish and backed by Trannyweb, there will be more on this in future issues.

We are becoming a bit concerned about the amount of advertising our members see on our site and indeed, in this very newsletter and so, we will shortly be making moves to put limits on the amount of advertising that is displayed to our members and Full Members, with Full Members seeing the least.

Having said that, Trannyweb does rely on a small income from advertising so please do visit some of our advertisers web sites. We need to get the balance right so that we can keep them happy without upsetting our members.

Heartfelt hugs, Katie xxxx

Katie Glover Suffers Heart Attack

As you may already know, Trannyweb's founder Katie Glover, suffered a heart attack on June 13th and was rushed to hospital. While undergoing a multitude of tests she had a further attack on June 18th but it was quickly brought under control.

Following an Angiogram she was diagnosed with a very rare form of heart disease which caused the coronary arteries to close up, cutting off the blood supply to the heart.

She has now returned home and will be on a cocktail of drugs to control the condition for the foreseeable future but at least surgery has now been ruled out.

Katie will be taking things easily for some time to come so please understand if she doesn't reply to your email immediately.

Having been a longtime supporter of cancer and third world charities like Actionaid, Katie says that in addition her two new flagship charities will be the British Heart Foundation (http://www.bhf.org.uk/) and the American Heart Association (http://www.americanheart.org).

Trannyweb Girls in Miss Sparkle top three by Maryanne Talmadge

TW's Lucy Dawlish on stage at Sparkle

The UK TW girls were out in force for Sparkle this year
with many sisters joining them from overseas for the
weekend. They were especially fortunate to have two TW girls in the 10 finalists for the "Miss Sparkle"
contest.

Miss Lucy Dawlish from the UK and and Miss Joelle Chessley from Canada both got into the final and made us all proud. Joelle came second and Lucy, third which means that 66.66% of the top 3 were TW girls!

On Saturday night 26 TW girls sat down for dinner at Velvets restaurant. That's the most we've had so far on a night out. Many more Trannyweb girls met up in Napoleon's nightclub later that evening and apart from the rain a good time was had by all.

Joelle and Lucy who came second and third

It was fantastic to meet up with old friends and finally meet some new ones in the flesh, so to speak!

This event is getting bigger every year and it will perhaps be worthwhile thinking of booking rooms for next year as soon as possible as many girls left it too late to get accommodation this time.

Note from Katie: Apologies if you were looking for the Trannyweb stand at Sparkle. Unfortunately it did not materialise because Maryanne got stuck in a lift for several hours! LOL!

What Trannyweb Has Done for Me...

This month, Trannyweb's Porscha Palomar talks to Samantha Smith. This interview was prompted by a message that Samantha sent to Katie glover, in which she said that Trannyweb had saved her life!

PP: In an email to Katie recently you stated, in so many words, that TW saved your life. What do you think it is that distinguishes Trannyweb from other sites you've been to?

Samantha Smith

SS: The biggest difference with TW compared with those other sites I have been unfortunate enough to frequent is the people, the community spirit and the sense of togetherness. Here at TW we are all tg and it does not matter what label you put on it we are just people in a similar situation helping each other whenever we can. That is the most important difference to me as I have never found it on any other site.

Most of my experiences on other sites had been pretty poor if not downright offensive. TW has a thriving community spirit in which its members are involved and active in welcoming people and helping them find their way around. There are so many wonderful girls here and it shocked me very much to discover just how willing they were to help, and with no strings attached.

I have received more good advice here in the last ten weeks than in years anywhere else and it has made such a difference to my life. I am now out to my family, have ventured out dressed for the first time and have found the courage to go back to my GP again after twenty years. I am truly happy for the first time just being myself and that speaks volumes for TW.

Many of the sites features such as the forums, blog and chat aren't unique but they are better and more informative than others I have experienced. They also reflect the experiences of real people. That's what TW is all about for me. The wonderful people who make it what it is and those behind the scenes who make it all possible.

Porscha Palomar

PP: I've found other sites to be very self-regarding. They work on the basis that you post a picture to be admired. Which is fine we all like a compliment. But if you're not pretty you don't fit in, that can be damaging and very hurtful. Honesty isn't always appreciated, I know, but I have found that even those girls I disagree with have offered me their support when I have needed it. That shows a human warmth that is priceless. Do you feel that humanity, if you like, allows you to express yourself more as a person.

SS: Yes TW lets you express yourself as a person and not just a picture to be admired. Most other sites insist on a picture and in my experience only really want raunchy ones. In fact, on two other sites it was the only way to get anyone to talk too you. At TW it is not required to post a picture and you can when you feel comfortable and ready to do so. This means you have to be judged on your personality alone.

I personally have not had a single problem on TW as I have found everyone to be very nice to me; even though I am very quiet when I go into chat, I am naturally shy, no one takes offence, they just accept that I am quiet at times. Everyone just lets you be yourself which is very liberating when you have been hiding away as long as I have.

PP: For any site like ours to truly succeed it has to have a beating heart at its core. TW hasn't let me down in this respect. You say you're shy, well I'm not shy, but I do keep myself to myself. TW has availed me of the opportunity to discuss things that I find difficult admitting even to myself. So I have seen myself evolve here perhaps even unravel. Do you feel you are experiencing similar and how do you see yourself evolving in the future.

SS: Yes TW has a very strong heart due to the people here and their willingness to help one another. TW is made by the wonderful people on here and those who run it. I have already evolved thanks to the great advice I have received from so many of the girls here. I never thought that I would be able to accept myself for who I really am and be truly comfortable being myself.

I thought I was doomed to living a lie for the rest of my life which as it was, would not have been for very long as I was depressed and ready to die. But now I am looking forwards and not backwards always wishing - if only. I am doing things to change it for the better, for the first time I am looking after myself rather than trying to destroy myself. I never thought I would ever venture outside my own front door let alone be able to approach my GP and tell all. This has been nothing short of a miracle.

After my previous experiences with GP's I never thought I would trust one again. As for the future it is my intention to go full time and get on hormones as soon as possible with the hope of finally getting SRS and if I can get enough funds go FFS as well. That is the main driving force in my life now and with the support of my family and my friends on TW I will achieve what I have always wanted, to live full time and be accepted as the woman I am and was born to be.
