Welcome
to the Trib Most of the changes have been of a programming nature so they will not be immediately obvious to the user and are also far too boring to talk about here. Scoop Newton, our intrepid tranny journalist, has been talking to the author of "True Selves" having reviewed it last month, and Lisa Laws checks out the celebrity fashions at the recent Oscars ceremony. Our enormous transgender survey continues apace - if you haven't taken it yet, please go here to be part of something lovely. You will need to be logged in first though. As an extra incentive, if you collect TrannyPoints you can now receive 500 for every survey you fill out! The first of our survey results are starting to come through now. We will of course, bring you more in the coming weeks. And get ready for Trannyweb's 8th Birthday Weekend!!! It's being put together by Danique Westerveld and will be such fun. Huggies, Katie xxxx
First TG Survey Results...
Well, as more and more TG people take our various surveys, the first meaningful results are now starting to come in.
Interestingly, there is a large spike in the age group of MtoF TV/CD survey respondents between 40 and 50. In fact they account for a staggering 40% of all respondents up to now. It was also very interesting to discover that 61% of survey respondents from the same group considered that they are totally in the closet, and 39% are out and proud. If you haven't taken our survey, please go here now to be part of something lovely. As an extra incentive, if you collect the TrannyPoints you will now receive 500 for every survey you fill out. We must do something constructive with our TrannyPoints soon. Perhaps we'll give away a gorgeous prize to the person with the most. So get going on your survey to be in with a chance. You'll also be helping the transgender community. Wanna be a Chat Show Host?
Well once again we are on the look out for volunteer Chat Hosts with big personalities to help run the TrannyChat chat rooms. We can't yet put you on TV but at least it's a start! If you enjoy chatting and would like to run your own show perhaps weekly or even more often, please let us know. We are especially keen to hear from people who live in the Australian and South Pacific time zones. If you would like to show your interest just click here to contact Katie.

We may be only just into 2007 but we are already thinking about our 8th birthday, which occurs in December.
Danique Westerveld is putting together a birthday weekend in the lovely Netherlands town of Groningen and you are invited! It doesn't matter if you are reading this in downtown New York or Sydney, Australia, put a note in your diary anyway and start saving for your air ticket! Once again, because of our birthday's proximity to the holiday season, we will probably try to celebrate on the weekend of January 18th - 20th 2008. More details will be available nearer the time but so far the program looks like this...
Friday 18th: Saturday 19th: Sunday 20th: Anyway, look out for more on this in the coming weeks or show your interest now by dropping Danique a line by clicking here. Red Carpet Fashion Sense by Lisa Laws High heels, strappy dresses, the world's press - what more could a girl want than a night out at the Oscars. Lisa Laws has been keeping an eye on the red carpet...So the Oscars came and went this week and not without notice from yours truly as well as every other fashion-conscious human on the planet! There were so many examples for us to pull from on the red carpet this year, but rather than run down the individuals I’ll keep to the "do’s and don’ts" as they pertain to those of us with too much fashion sense for one gender.
As this was her first Oscar appearance, to make an impression she enlisted the help of the fashion editors of Vogue (color me green with envy) to chose her dress. I know she didn’t pay them, but she does deserve a refund! They chose for her a dark brown dress with a space man spiff coat to make her shoulders look bigger and give her a higher false waistline. Big problem was with the pockets. Free tip: no pockets on dresses... ever!!! The pockets made her look larger than she actually is, and unnecessarily so. They created a waistline that would make Dom Deluise flinch. As a plus sized gal myself, there is nothing more annoying than designers telling us that we should hide our shape! We were made this way! Enjoy it! Jennifer, if I may be so bold, next year please enlist the help of someone with plus size experience! You are far too fabulous to be seen this way. A wide strap, V-neckline in a muted tone with a shinny finish and Joan Rivers would have been gushing doll! Lesson: Too often we take our body’s and measure them against those with better waist lines or bust lines or whatever, but when you do that and you choose to hide what you should be accentuating and you end up where Jennifer did. You are all too beautiful to be hidden!
Lesson: if you have an asset use it girls! Don’t be afraid to pull everything to just one feature and it will make you shine. Finally Cameron Diaz, who let’s face it could get away with almost anything and if it didn’t go over she could giggle it away with that easy smile and carefree look she has and move on to what ever is next. I swear she is a walking advertisement for prozac! If only I could feel the way she looks!!!! |
The
Trannyweb Celebrity Interview
MN: When did you first start getting involved with transgendered issues? MB: The year was 1978. One of my graduate school classmates Nick, who had always presented as male, came to class one day in female attire. Despite my professional training, seeing him that way really startled me. The intellectual understanding that I had gained at school from books, classes and doing term papers on gender identity didn't help when it came to dealing with the emotional aspects of a situation involving someone that I knew personally. I realized that it was not enough to study gender in the abstract or from a distance and that I had to explore this issue by talking in depth with Nick and also with other TG individuals. And so I did. Nick brought me to his TG group and as I listened to the stories of the people there and heard how alone and scared they felt, my heart went out to them. At that meeting, I decided to dedicate my professional life to working with TG individuals and have done so for the past 29 years. MN: Do you see any ways in which standards of care (SOC) can be improved?
Also, the SOC needs to be simplified and be made more realistic. TG issues do not fall into a one size fits all category. There are many TG individuals who exist "outside the box" and away from the polarities of male and female. There are loads of TG individual that don't fall into societal definition of male or female and we can't treat them like they do. Allowances need to be made for the "shades of grey". MN: In your opinion, what is the most important issue facing TG people today? MB: I don't think it's changed that much from ten years ago when I wrote True Selves. The most important issues are discrimination and rejection. It's true that the public is more educated about TG issues and have a greater level of comfort, that didn't exist 10 years ago, with TG individuals. Much of this education stems from all the media exposure to this issue, even though it is sometimes obviously exploitive. The soap opera All My Children even has a leading character who is a MTF and whose sexual orientation is lesbian. So, minds are more open - until this occurs to a family member or employee or coworker. Then, in all too many cases, we are where we were 10 years ago. Tied into this, I also think that another important issues is the fight TG people are facing to de-pathologize TG identification. It doesn't need to be in the DSM-IV but it does need to be recognized as a medical condition for which insurance help should be provided. More and better research on etiology might help speed this along. MN: What advice do you have for the family and friends of a TG person? MB: Look beyond the exterior. Try to let go of the image of who you thought your loved one was or who you wanted them to be and listen to what they are telling you. Ask yourself what possible motive they would have to make up what they are telling you unless it was absolutely their truth. If you think that you have lost this person forever, grieve for the lost image or role that the TG person formerly fulfilled but remember that the person that you loved is still alive and all the history that you shared together still exists, even though the exterior of the TG individual is different. Also keep in mind that this is not something that your TG loved one did TO you but rather something that they had to do for themselves. You have a choice as to how to react so choose to open up you mind and heart and empathize with the TG person's pain and frustration, and love and accept them. MN: What do you see in the future for TG people? This could involved new surgical techniques, legal issues, etc.? MB: Legally, I hope to see more consistency nationwide so that TG persons in all states (and not just some).will be able to have their birth certificates, passports and driver's licenses changed to reflect their gender identity. This would extend across the board so that there will no longer be problems with getting the name changed on things such as a mortgage or on university records. Surgically there is rumor that soon we will have voice boxes that can be implanted to create a female sounding voice. In FTM surgery, we will see fully functioning penises that can erect by the use of microchips and that are sensate. It is said that with the use of stem cells we can change the way by which masculinization or feminization occurs so that TG individuals will no longer be at the mercy of hormones and their effect upon the body. Culturally, I see TG people banding together much as gay people did in the past and demanding respect as a group. MN: I highly recommend your book True Selves for anyone who needs to explore this issue more. Do you have any other books planned? MB: I just finished writing a book but it is not on gender. It is on how to revive a dying relationship and/or sex life. Now I need to find a publisher. |
