Welcome to the Trib

Welcome to the March 2006 issue of The Tranny Trib. It's been quite a month since our last issue and a lot has happened.

February started very badly with news of the passing of one of our longtime members, Briony Jay. She will be badly missed.

We then had more bad news from the company that processes our membership payments, who suddenly decided that they could no longer process payments made from mobile phones. There's more on that in the column to the right.

Dr Minako Sakura unveils her new ebook which is aimed at those of us who are no longer content with simply being girly at the weekend and are ready to take the next step on the transgender journey.

Robyn Webb looks at the movie, "Beautiful Boxer" and there's a chance to win a copy on DVD.

We had hoped to bring you an interview this month with Felicity Huffman who is up for an Oscar for her rols as a TG person in the movie, "TransAmerica". Our bid for a short interview with her had been in for around a month and we sent the questions over at least three weeks back. Everything seemed to be going fine and we were just waiting for the answers to be returned so we could include them in this month's Tranny Trib for you.

However, we were absolutely stunned when she refused to give us an interview after all. Felicity Huffman's management simply sent a message stating that she is not giving any interviews at this time. That is very odd considering how close she is to the Acadamy Awards. She appears to have given plenty of other interviews so we were left feeling a bit snubbed by a person who was not happy about talking to the very community her movie is about. It was extra odd because we have been going all out to promote the film too.

Oh well, maybe Elton John will speak to us in next month's issue.

Hugs, Katie xxxx

Beautiful Boxer reviewed by Robyn Webb

I just had the privilege of viewing the film, “Beautiful Boxer,” recently released on DVD by Here! TV, the newly launched Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender television network.

It is my feeling that this film should be experienced by any and all people with an interest in transgender issues, particularly those who are considering gender transition, and have concerns about the obstacles they may encounter personally and socially.

“Beautiful Boxer” is a biographical film, detailing the struggle of champion Thai kickboxer Parinya Charoenphol, known throughout Thailand as Nong Toom.  Though the story takes place largely in rural Thailand, a setting which is completely alien to so many of us, the commonality of the emotions and events experienced by the protagonist, Nong Toom, is astounding, and truly emphasizes the shared experience of the transgender community, despite its tremendous diversity.

The part of Nong Toom is adeptly portrayed by real-life kickboxer, Asanee Suwan, who brings remarkable sensitivity to the role, and was awarded the Thai version of the Best Actor Oscar for his performance.

Director Ekachai Uekrongtham brings the story to life brilliantly through a screenplay framed in the context of an interview with main character Nong Toom, and presented in a series of flashback scenes, vividly photographed by Chouchart Nantitanyatada, portraying the natural beauty of Thailand and the rich and colorful traditions of Thai culture.

The story of Nong Toom is surely an inspiration to anyone seeking a means of gender expression.  As is so common to so many transgender people, Nong Toom was aware early on of her gender variance.  Born to a poor family of itinerant farm workers, Toom struggled with her gender identity while the entire family suffered in the effort to scratch a meager living out of the soil.

Toom remained devoted to her family, even while serving as a novitiate in a Buddhist monastery as a young child.  As a teen, she discovered a natural talent for the sport of kickboxing, and though it was inconsistent with her character and identity, she pursued it as a means of providing much needed income to her impoverished family.

Trannyweb Obituary

It is with great sadness that we must
report the death of Briony Jay, one of our UK members, who was fairly active in the forum's and chat room and who often turned up for our girly nights out around the country.

Briony died peacefully on February 7th and was buried on Friday 24th Feb. She will be greatly missed. If you knew Briony and would like to pay your respects, an obituary thread is running in the forums here.

NEW DOWNLOADABLE TRANNY eBOOK

This issue sees the publication of Dr Minako Sakura's latest offering, "Beyond the Weekend", which follows on from her two previous books, "The Weekend Woman" and "Steppin' Out on a Saturday Night".

They last two books were aimed at people who are just happy to be a bit girly at the weekend. However, as the title suggests, "Beyond the Weekend" was written to cater for those of us who increasingly feel that we do not want to take off our girly clothes when Monday comes.

If that sounds like you, then you can download your copy of Beyond the Weekend by clicking here.

Metacharge Withdraws Mobile Phone Billing

We were astounded earlier this week, when Metacharge, the company who handle our membership payments, withdrew their Mobile Phone billing method.

What that means in reality is that our members who charge their monthly or quarterly subscriptions to their mobile phones will find that their memberships will return to 'Basic' on their next due day.

We are of course very sorry for the inconvenience that this will cause and we are also not happy about the revenue that Trannyweb will lose because of this decision. However, the matter is out of our hands and the change has been forced upon us.

It may not be any consolation to those who are unable to use credit cards, but at least some of our members who are affected by the loss of mobile phone billing will be able to take advantage of our half price full annual membership offer. If you would like to start an annual full membership subscription paid for by credit card at half the normal price, please click here to upgrade right now.

UK Girly Gathering reviewed by Tina B
Queeen's Hotel
The Trannyweb Girly Gathering

On Saturday 17th February a number of TW girls turned up for a night out on Canal Street Manchester. Sophia Parry and Justine Cairns organised an excellent evening.

Queeen's Hotel
The Queen's Hotel

However, the first confusing thing we found was that the International Hotel is under new management and is now called The Queens - are they trying to tell us something?

As usual, on these occasions and those of you who have met me will know, I arrived dressed met Sophia and had a wander around Piccadilly Station before meeting up in Munroe’s.

The next Trannyweb Girly Nite Out takes place on Saturday 1st April. It would be foolish not to go.

Have you ever seen an item on your credit card statement that says:

...or something like that?

Well just in case you have and you've been wondering what it is, we can now reveal all.

Many of our members share their credit card accounts with their wives or other members of their families so using the word "Trannyweb" as the statement "billing descriptor" that relates to their monthly, quarterly or annual membership subscriptions would not be the best idea.

Therefore, we have simply used the name of our company which is non-descript and has nothing to do with TG. It's and when shortened and mixed with the name of the card processing company, Metacharge, it comes out as , or something very similar.

Transgenderism in China by Bennie Lee

In March of 2003 I spent three weeks in Beijing, China. As a transgendered person and member of the larger GLBT community, I was curious about Chinese legal and cultural attitudes in this regard. As it happened, I became enrolled in a class at Wichita State University last semester which focused on contemporary Chinese politics. As part of my research project for that class I submitted the following term paper which I am now pleased to share with you...

In his article, "Jobs and Gender", published in the November 11, 2005 New/Features section of the www.fridae.com Asian gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered website, Douglas Sanders writes, "As RuPaul [American transgendered entertainer] said "We are all born naked--after that, everything is drag. And as Judith Butler said, we 'perform' gender. But not all of us do it 'right'. In Asia, sexual orientation is of thought of in terms of gender and gender performance.
