GP: I'm Grayson Perry and I'm an artist. I'm 44 and I make mainly ceramic works. I won the Turner prize for Contemporary Art in 2003, and I'm also a Transvestite known as Claire and have been since I was about twelve. CC: ...and how would you describe your work? GP: I make mainly vases, they're completely traditional looking ceramic vases and the "Art" if you like is in what I decorate them with. Which is images of social, political, sexual, artistic and other conceptual ideas. I use a whole range of traditional techniques; inlaying, painting, gilding, transfers, photography. So my work is very elaborate, humorous and hopefully beautiful. CC: I've heard Claire described in the press as your female Alter-ego, is that how you see her? GP: Not a word I would ever use CC: How would you see her? GP: ...err, me in a dress! I don't put on any different voices or different characteristics really when I'm dressed up I'm just me in a dress. "Alter-ego" is just a kind of wishful thinking by a lot of journalists who think I have some sort of shadow self. CC: So what's the relationship between Grayson, Claire and your artwork, who informs who? GP: How being a transvestite has affected my work? There's no direct correlation; but I think there's a kind of obsessional nature to my work, also I was drawn to a medium that is seen as more feminine and classed as one that's looked down upon by the contemporary art world. My transvestite life crops up as a subject matter in my work and I have made a lot pots about transvestitism, fetishism, and masculinity over the years. CC: So, is creativity a female thing? GP: Oh no! not at all, I think we're all drawn to the idea of polarities. People like to intellectualise and put things in boxes and that gender polarity is another one; I think it's much more complex than that, creativity is a multi-determined thing every artist has their own version of how they are creative, their needs and desires. I mean some people think being an artist is an erotic activity or an imbalance or lack of something in their lives. CC: Obviously your family know all about Claire? GP: Yes I'm totally out to my wife and my daughter, I couldn't not be. I mean I'm out to the whole world, it's not like I'm keeping it a secret. And my wife, she knew I was a Tranny before we even dated and my daughter has grown up with it. That's not to say it isn't completely without issues some times but she knew what she was getting. As for my daughter she's quite happy to see me dressed but I don't dress when her friends are around because I don't want to embarrass her. CC: How would you describe Claire's style, because I've heard it described as all sorts of things and obviously, where does she shop? GP: (laughs) Well she's got two styles really; she has a high street style, like most TV's but I tend to shop at the trendy end of the market nowadays but most of my wardrobe is my "little girl" dresses, but I'm kind of modifying that. I'm slightly erring towards a sixties/seventies "queen" look with coats and hats, but still very short with lots of petticoats and patent leather shoes. I don't wear false boobs or anything like that apart from when I'm in high street mode; which isn't that often really CC: So, talking about Queens, this week you actually met The Queen of England. GP: Yes, I don't know if I was the first ever tranny to meet the queen dressed but it felt like it. It was quite funny, an opportunity not to miss. CC: Can you tell us what she said to you or is that a secret? GP: She didn't say much at all; I think the queen goes into autopilot when she meets people. I think it was the initial contact that was most interesting in that she took a beat of about 3 or 4 seconds before she opened her mouth. Her eyes sort of bugged a lot as soon as she clapped eyes on me. It was fun. CC: You won £20,000 with the Turner Prize. What did you spend it on .. surely not shoes? GP: No it got dissolved into the pot, twenty thousand is a lot of money but it's not a life-changing amount, but it's very, very welcome and tax free .. so that's nice! CC: You're working on a Television programme for Channel 4 in the UK - tell us about that. GP: I had lots of offers after winning the Turner to make TV programmes so I chose a production company that I was most comfortable with. We got a commission pretty much straight away from Channel 4 to make a documentary about transvestitism and masculinity; putting it in a wider context. What are the pressures on men that cause transvestitism, because I'm interested in that. CC: So, how does a 44 year old man dressed as a small, female child help the cause of the wider Transgendered community? GP: (Knowing laugh) Well I don't get any stick and I go about my life without getting any hassle and surely that gives hope to people who are into a more "passing" style of dressing. The only real negative press I ever got was from trannies ironically! I'm clearly not the right kind of weirdo! And I've got to say the most militantly vociferous of those critics tend to be the Transsexuals, surprise surprise, and well .. (sighs) .. get over it! There's more on
