This month's celebrity is
well known on the British Tranny scene - Andrea
Hillaire, who runs Stormes transgender clubs.
Stormes was one of the first places that our own Katie
Glover ever went out as a girl.
TT: How well did you know Ron Storme, who started Stormes?
AH: I only really knew Ron for 7 months. Ron's was
the first place I ever went out too and I never missed
a week. I got to know Ron quite well in that time and
she used to call Andrea's World the official unofficial
Ron Stormes website. I am going to start reposting all
the old archives from those early times very soon on
the Stormes website.
TT: What was she like?
AH: Ron Storme was an amazing person with an unequalled
charisma, you would walk into Stepneys and immediately
feel comfortable. Ron had time for people and would
always try to help everyone.
TT: When Ron died in October 2000, why did you decide
to take over the reigns?
AH: I was approached by Stepneys, the old Stormes venue,
in Feb 2001 to take over as the Hostess of Stormes.
I pretty well knew everyone after taking their photographs
for Andrea's World for almost a year and becoming the
Hostess just seemed like just a stage further really.
While Ronnie was ill I took it upon myself to make everyone
feel welcome anyway. Also for 14 weeks whilst someone
else was hosting the venue, I did the same thing.
TT: What are the Stormes underlying principles (if
any) that make you different from the rest?
AH: To give Transgender people the chance to get out,
help the new ones among us. I also like to have a mix
of people so that we can give the general public a better
understanding of what we are all about. If someone is
new I like to put them with our regular guests so that
they can feel at home straight away. I think the mix
is important - we have gays, lesbians and straight people
as well, which seems to make for such a good night.
TT: You've recently been running Stormes nights in
other parts of the country. How have the tranny girls
outside the metropolis taken to it?
AH: Stormes night at The Granby in Reading has been
very successful considering being on the first Monday
of the month and despite a bit of a shaky start. The
night now attracts up to 80 people each month.
TT: There is bad news though for Stormes in London
and at Pink Punters in Milton Keynes?
AH: Yes, I have made a difficult decision after a great
deal of thought and in view of the amount of money it
cost to put on the events, also after the 3 months I
had given the night to take off without success. The
Stormes London venue is now closed for the foreseeable
future as is Stormes in Milton Keynes. The only night
that will continue will be at the Granby in Reading
once a month, although I may be doing some co-promotion
nights throughout the year and around the UK. The first
of these will be on 22nd April in London, full details
of the event will be available at http://www.stormes-london.com.
